Gonzalez stuns Federer

The tennis was awesome. Federer found some form at-last; Gonzalez re-emerged as the Gonzo we saw in January this year… and, the result is tennis at its very best. Gonzalez edged past Federer, 3-6, 7-6, -7-5.

In the first two sets, Federer was in total control; especially on his service games. He volleyed brilliantly and played solid from both the wings. But, the best tennis came at the end of second set and in the third set.

In the second set tie-break, Gonzalez played brilliant tennis to take the set. He raced away to 6-0 lead before finishing the breaker with a 7-1 score. In the second game of third set, Gonzalez played some magnificent shots to hold serve from 0-40. In the next game, Federer saved two break points. In the next two games both the players held serve by saving one break point. After that it went on serve until Gonzalez finally broke Federer to lead 6-5. He then served out to take the set and the match.

For the records, this is Gonzalez’s first win over Federer in 11 meetings. And, this is also Federer’s first ever loss at the round-robin stage of Master’s cup.

Earlier in the day, Roddick defeated Davydenko in three sets.
